Facebook reinvents Star Wars trailer with new '360 video' feature and it's unlike anything you've seen before

The force is strong with Facebook 's latest feature.
The social network has unveiled a new type of video that users will start seeing in their news feeds .
It's called "3D video" and it allows you to move the viewpoint as the video continues to play.
If you're watching it on a computer, you can use the mouse to move the view and look around you. If you're on a phone or a tablet you can tilt it to change the view.
And what better way to launch a new feature than with an exclusive clip from perhaps the decade's most anticipated film, Star Wars: The Force Awakens .

"To create 360 videos, a special set of cameras is used to record all 360 degrees of a scene simultaneously. This means that when the video is playing on Facebook, you can choose what angle you want to see it from," explained Maher Saba, Facebook's engineering director.
"In the future, imagine watching 360 videos of a friend’s vacation to a small village in France or a festival in Brazil — you’ll be able to look around and experience it as if you were there.
"Along with updates from your friends and family, you will also be able to discover amazing new content on Facebook from media companies, organizations, and individual creators."

In this case, the Star Wars video was crafted by Lucasfilm's special effects team.
The feature was revealed at Facebook's Oculus Connect event, which is tied in to the Oculus Rift VR headset that Facebook owns.
The social network confirmed that several other content creators were working on 360 videos, including GoPro, the Discovery Channel and VICE.
"If you’re using Facebook on the web or on Android, you should be able to see 360 videos in News Feed soon. We plan to roll this out for iOS in the coming months," Saba said.
