Barack Obama to Prince Charles: Americans like you more than me

The Prince of Wales was forced to offer some consoling words to President Barack Obama last night after the US president observed that the American public prefers British royals to their own politicians.

“I think it’s fair to say that the American people are quite fond of the royal family,” said Mr Obama as the pair posed for the cameras in the Oval Office, before adding: “They like them much better than they like their own politicians.”

“I don’t believe that,” the Prince shot back, reassuringly, before telling Mr Obama how much he had enjoyed returning to Mount Vernon, the plantation home of America’s first president, George Washington, which he first visited in 1970.

Camilla, The Duchess of Cornwall, wearing an oyster-colored coat-dress and a diamond brooch, sat on a sofa to her husband’s right as the two men made small-talk for the cameras during a three-day visit to Washington DC and Louisville, Kentucky.
Mr Obama has a tough few years as president, with own personal approval ratings being “under water” for much of his second term, with his current weekly Gallup rating languishing at 47 per cent.

He may also, factually speaking, have been speaking the truth about his countrymen’s views of the British royal family.

A CNN poll of American voters from 2012 found the Queen with an 82 per cent approval rating, with Prince William on 77 per cent and Prince Charles at 57 per cent – ten points higher than his host, even if he was too polite to mention it.
