A Taiwanese domestic plane with 53
passengers on board clipped a bridge and crashed into a river in Taipei
shortly after take off.
Ten people are awaiting rescue after the incident, Taiwan's Central
News Agency said. Taiwanese media posted pictures of the plane in the
water nearly 100 yards away from the shore of Keelung River.
The media agency said the TransAsia Airways flight from Taipei lost
contact with flight controllers at 10:55 a.m. local time on its way to
the outlying island of Kinmen.
The fuselage landed in the river near the city's Sungshan airport.
Passengers and rescuers were seen standing on the hill and swimming in
the water.
The plane was identified as a French-made twin-engine turboprop ATR 72 with a two-pilot air crew.
The accident comes just months after a TransAsia ATR-72 crashed while
attempting to land on the island of Penghu off Taiwan's cost that
killed 48 people and injured another 10. Stormy weather and low
visibility were suspected factors in the crash last July.
